Who Invented the Compass?

  • Post category:Discover

⏱ Although it was probably invented in China, the modern compass as we all know it was first introduced into the Mediterranean Sea by sailors from Amalfi ⏱

Amalfi is the oldest of the maritime republics, and it is located in the center of one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Southern Italy.

The adventure of the independent city of Amalfi, which began more than 1.000 years ago, was short.

However even today if you walk around the historic center you will find the legacy of that great blissful era. The heritage that Amalfi offers to the world in terms of tourism and landscape is still very rich.

You can coast it and discover all the inlets or sail towards some of the islands preferred by the international jet set, such as Capri, Procida, Ischia.

You can move from North to South, admire vibrant cities like Naples and Salerno, climb the volcano Vesuvius, or visit the largest open-air museum in the world, the ancient Roman city of Pompeii.

And don’t forget to taste limoncello, a delicious liqueur made from Amalfi’s lemons 😋
